Morning Ritual redefines waking not as an interruption, but as a physical beginning.
Instead of a single tap, users activate the alarm through intentional hand movement, gently engaging the body before the mind.
Problem statement
Waking up is often a stressful experience.
56% of wake-up events include snoozing.
Up to 1 hour of sleep inertia can affect concentration after waking.
85% of adults rely on alarms to wake up every day.
Context Analysis
Typical alarm interactions are passive.
Most alarm clocks today require only a single tap or swipe to silence the sound. This interaction is extremely brief and reactive, often performed automatically without engaging the body or mind.
As a result, waking is treated primarily as a moment to stop noise, rather than as a meaningful start to the day.
Waking as a physical beginning
Morning Ritual is an alarm clock that redefines waking not as an interruption, but as a physical beginning. Instead of silencing the alarm with a quick tap, users deactivate it through intentional hand movement.
By engaging the body in the very first moment of the day, the product encourages a more mindful and active start to the morning, transforming a simple alarm into a daily ritual.
Research
Under increasing daily pressure, people are becoming more sensitive to time than ever before.
"When my alarm rings, I immediately feel pressure.
I check the clock over and over because I’m worried about being late.
Mornings don’t feel calm—they feel like a race against time."
— University student interview
How might we transform the act of turning off an alarm into a small physical ritual that gently activates the body?
Initial Sketches
Interaction Logic
1. Setting the alarm
A red marker is placed along the outer ring. The position corresponds to the alarm time.
2. Wake signal
At the set time, light and sound activate subtly. The red sphere illuminates, guiding attention.
3. Silencing the alarm
The user rotates the red sphere one full clockwise cycle. Internal resistance prevents abrupt movement. The alarm deactivates only through completed motion.
